VICENZA - ART; ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPE
VICENZA – ART, ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPE
Vicenza, historically dominated by alternating seigeuries and then by the Serenissima Republic of Venice, was never a protagonist of political history, but became renowned as the city of Palladio, the architect who redesigned its image in the sixteenth century and made it famous all over the world. Vicenza’s name is inseparably linked to that of Palladio who created and moulded it in accordance with ideas of rational classicism, not without an ambition, that of his patrons, which gave the city the appearance of a grandiose urban stage setting. This book, with its splendid large-format images, highlights the most varied aspects of the city from its medieval walls to the Gothic palazzi, from the great Palladian monuments to various unexpected, surprising and magnificent Baroque buildings. The book also casts a glance on the province with its splendid towns and landscapes and, thanks to an original text by the Vicentine scholar, Luca Trevisan, contributes towards investigating not only the stereotypes but also the image of this city whose architectural treasures have justly become part of Unesco’s.
